Espen Øino: One to watch!

The revered Norwegian yacht designer, whose Monaco studio is best known for its work for clients building very large at yards such as Lürssen, has applied his talents to a limited edition wristwatch created by Scalfaro.

A porthole is said to have been the initial influence for the ‘Scalfaro EØ’, which is machined from a solid block of stainless steel at the Germany-based family firm’s Swiss workshops. Moreover, the numerous components that make up the finished timepiece are screwed together with ‘ScalfaScrews’, which were inspired by winches. Note the bezel includes port and starboard dimples. The various decorative finishes are claimed to make it sparkle like a diamond in the sunlight.
Note the port starboard lights at nine and three o'clock and the design studio's name is at six o'clock; and a big 'EØ' sits on the strap. The founders of the watch company, Alexander and Dominik Kuhnle, are said to have met Øino at a  Monaco show, where they couldn't help but compare the design of a yacht and a watch; both concern aesthics and the packaging of volume.
Production is limited to just 100 pieces worldwide. To be launched at the forthcoming 2009 Monaco Yacht Show, it will retail at €6,950.
The company is planning other limited edition series from different yacht designers, which will no doubt encourage the ‘collectors’.
