McConaghy 36 One-Design...

The first infused-carbon boat is well on the way at the Australian company’s production facility in Zhuhai, China.

JULY 2010

Three prominent Americas Cup designers and engineers are involved with the project – namely Harry Dunning, current yacht designer for Mascolino Latino AC syndicate, and Dirk Kramers and Kirst Feddersen, who were both involved in the last three Americas Cup matches with Alinghi. They have been working with McConaghy Boats’ principals, Jono Morris and Mark Evans.
The first MC36 is expected to hit the water in December.
The model is optimised for upwind and downwind sailing and she will get a minimal-clutter cockpit – note there will be carbonfibre hiking bars, so no lifelines.
The spars and rigging will be composite. And the sail plan will include a fat-head mainsail, two genoas, and two asymmetrical spinnakers with pull-down lines. Retracting centreline spinnaker pole prodder.
Auxiliary propulsion is down to a 20hp outboard and clever retraction system.
