Alex McDiarmid’s ‘Iwana’ concept...

Design

Her 85m profile is lizard-inspired.

MAY 2011

Young British yacht designer Alex McDiarmid’s latest concept is the 85m (280ft) 'Iwana'. The inspiration for this one is said to come from lizards, iguanas in particular as regards stance and colouring. The word iwana is derived from a Spanish form of the original Taino name for the iguanas; the Tainos are an indigenous people of the Caribbean. Note how the main superstructure takes its form from the head of an iguana, while the decks and communication tower are inspired by the dorsal crests of these beautiful lizards.
The designer says he was adamant about keeping a classic bow, but wanted to really push some boundaries with the styling, especially with the aft section of the hull and superstructure,
McDiarmid’s studio is in Marseilles, France.
