Fitzroy Yachts hands over Barry Houghton's 'Salperton IV'...

Industry News

She is the New Zealand yachtbuilder’s second project for the Englishman. At 45m, she is just 1m longer than the previous boat the yard built for him, the '08 launch Salperton III, and she will be quicker. Big-yacht regatta ambitions have driven this project from the start.

JUNE 2009

She has a 61m (200ft) Southern Spars mast and roller-furling boom, Future Fibres’ PBO rigging and a sail wardrobe from Southern Spars-sister operation North Sails NZ. Her total sail area is huge considering her waterline length. Her mainsail is 573 square-metres (1,900square-feet)!
The interior design was handled by the Adam Lay Studio, who also did the interior for Salperton III.
She left the yard in June '09 for her first cruise, a three-month spell in the Pacific. Following that she plans to head up to the Caribbean for the winter season and then to the Mediterranean for the 2010 summer season.
For those wanting a little more on her English owner, Barry Houghton’s career was spent in the telecommunications industry. He ended up selling his company, the Rainsford Group, to Marconi just before the telecomms ‘bubble’ burst for a little over US$2 billion in the late ‘90s and his first boat was bought following that deal.
The first Salperton was a renamed brokerage 37m (121ft) Perini Navi.
At 53m (174ft), the Dubois-drawn Salperton II was built for him by Alloy Yachts in New Zealand.
The name Salperton comes from a Cotswold estate of the same name that is owned by the Horton family.
