The veteran racer takes on his next challenge as skipper of the record chaser.

MAY 2010

Cam Lewis, the multiple circumnavigator, world champion dingy sailor and America’s Cup veteran, joins Vlad Murnikov’s Team SpeedDream as skipper.
Lewis’s achievements range from twin Finn Gold Cups and 505 World Championships to big boat racing and offshore multihull record setting. He was a key crew-member on board Dennis Connor’s victorious Stars and Stripes catamaran when they decidedly beat the 90ft (27.4m) super-monohull from New Zealand during the 1988 America’s Cup. He was the only American aboard Commodore Explorer, the catamaran that in ‘93 broke the mythical 80-days-around-the-world record to become the first holder of the coveted Trophée Jules Verne. And in The Race, the ultimate around-the-world sailing competition among unrestricted multihulls that took place in 2000, Cam Lewis’s 110ft (33.5m) catamaran Team Adventure was arguably the fastest boat in the fleet and only serious damages pushed his team into third place.
Before steering things on-water, Cam Lewis will first play an active role in helping develop the practical aspects of SpeedDream, working the designers and engineers to create on-deck and below-deck environments that are safe and practical for her crew in all conditions.
